Our Lady of the Highway Shrine

In 1958 this shrine was built by Father Keis, the Pastor of the Church of Assumption and by his generous parishioners and friends. This tribute to our Blessed Lady was conceived by Father Keis and designed by Vincent Mohr.

The ancient devotion to Our Lady of the Way was chosen as the subject of this Shrine. For the past fifteen centuries this devotion has been renewed and adapted to the prevailing type of travel. Father Keis designed the Shrine to have three fluted arches dedicating the Shrine to Our Lady of the Land, Sea, and Air: the three modes of travel indigenous to Pomona. The Land because in front of the Shrine is the famous United States highway Route 30. The Sea because but a few miles to the east is the Atlantic Ocean. The air because overhead fly airplanes from the National Aviation Facilities Experimental Station located within a mile of this Shrine.

The Statue of Our Lady with the Christ Child is carved from one piece of Carra marble and is imported from Italy. The Stations of the Cross are carved from the same marble. This Carra marble is the same variety marble in which the finest works of Michelangelo are executed. The twinkling candles of many colors burn night and day attesting the love and devotion of the many travelers who stop by to rest and pray and go away refreshed physically and spiritually.
